Emergency roof access, following storm damage
Overview
Roof leak discovered in a commercial unit based within a business park near Chester. Extensive damage had been caused to one area of the roof, due to storm damage. Roof located above occupied office spaces. The unit required safe access to the roof so the maintenance contractor could investigate damage and repair leaks as soon as possible, without closing the unit off underneath.
A5G Access were contacted to design and install confined access scaffolding over the damaged area of roof, meaning the maintenance contractor could access the roof and complete their work without closing the unit off. Scaffold was installed safely, to a high standard, and was completely clear from first lift to last.
The Challenge
Accessing the roof was not an issue in this case. Rectifying external works above occupied offices was. With staff inside for the duration of the project, our scaffold had to have measures in place over pedestrian access to ensure debris/members didn’t fall through or into the walkway. The business park had servicing areas shared between units so we couldn’t deliver or install the scaffold when one of the other businesses were due to come on site using the same access area.
Our Approach
Our CISRS registered engineers designed a bespoke TG20 scaffold with boarded platforms and edge protection. Completed with fan/debris netting positioned above units access/entrance and walkway directly under roof work. A5G delivered and installed outside of peak times for the business park so as not to disrupt other local units coming on and off-site.
Full inspections were carried out upon scaffold handover and every single day during the hire period of over 6 days. All paperwork given to business/client at each stage so roof repairs could be completed with confidence, and they could be sure both employees and visitors were as safe as could be expected around the scaffold.
“We didn’t want to close the office so having a scaffold that allowed the roofers to get on with their work safely without posing a risk to our staff was perfect.”
Result
The roof maintenance contractor found and repaired the damaged area caused by the storm. No delays to day to day business within the unit. We returned the day after repair was completed to take the scaffold down smoothly, leaving the unit clear to access.
